Targeted therapy
The limitations of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery are apparent and have been the impetus for developing targeted therapies. Targeted therapy is a type of medication that blocks the growth of cancer cells by interfering with specific targeted molecules needed for carcinogenesis and tumor growth, rather than by simply interfering with rapidly dividing cells (e.g. with traditional chemotherapy). Targeted drugs are active as single agents for the treatment of cancer and offer the opportunity to reverse resistance to chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. Targeted therapies have been established for the treatment of advanced cancers and are now demonstrating benefit in the adjuvant arena.
